Walking

Just over one fifth of all trips in London are less than 1km and almost two thirds are less than 5km. Even for these short distances the car is often used - cars account for 20% of all trips under 500 metres. Many of these journeys could be walked and would help to achieve the Mayor's target to significantly reduce traffic volume by 2010.

Short journeys in motorised vehicles are harmful to the environment - exhaust emissions pollute the air we breathe. Catalytic converters have proved effective over long journeys but have little effect for trips of less than a few kilometres and these short trips are the ones we can easily change to walking.

Transport for London is committed to making London one of the most walking friendly cities by 2015.

Cycling

Cycling is a quick, healthy, affordable and non-polluting form of travel. More cycling will lead to less congestion by reducing the number of short car journeys. It will also help reduce air pollution and bring improvements in London’s street environment.

Half of all journeys made in London are under 2 miles, a distance easily cycled. Cycling makes sense as part of city-life. The average 4-mile journey in central London takes just 22 minutes by bicycle. Cyclists can park for free and don’t have to pay the congestion charge. Making a trip by bicycle means that you can often get closer to your destination than if you used public transport, cutting down your journey time.

Working together, TfL and the London boroughs are working to implement a Cycling Action Plan to deliver a step change in cycling in the capital. The overall aim is to treble cycle use by 2010, with a target of an 80% increase in cycling. To find out more visit Cycling in London.
