What is car sharing?

Car sharing is when 2 or more people share a car and travel together. It allows people to benefit from the convenience of the car while alleviating the associated problems of travel costs and congestion.

When should I car share?

Consider car sharing for:

  • Getting to work
  • Doing the weekly shop
  • Taking the children to school
  • Going to the match at the weekend
  • Travelling to a festival, event or show
  • Getting to and from university
  • Visiting friends
Why should I car share?
  • Car sharing saves you money. By travelling with others you can share transport costs. Sharing cars undercuts the cost of almost all other transport methods.
  • Car sharing reduces the number of cars on the road. Fewer cars mean: reduced congestion, easier parking and less pollution.
  • Car sharing provides a real solution in rural areas where there is a lack of public transport.
  • Car sharing can give you more choice about where you work in relation to home and employers more choice as to who they employ.
  • Car sharing reduces the need for a private car.

5. You can contact any of the matched names through an automated e-mail program.

6. Whether a suitable has been found or not, the journey will be saved on the system until the journey date has expired. Other liftshare members can access your logged journey plans by searching for matches themselves. As soon as a match is found you will be contacted through the automated e-mail program by the third party.

What safety precautions are there?

We have tried to make this site as secure as possible. Safety and security of all those using the service is our major concern. For more information about safety and security of personal information please read liftshare's  Terms and Conditions and Privacy Policy

We hope to have answered most of your questions in our FAQ section but some additional questions are answered below:

Is my personal information stored securely?

All members' details are stored securely in the database and only the individuals' intended travel information and email numbers can be accessed online.

How do I know that my driver/passenger is who they claim to be?

Check their ID and show them yours. Passports are obviously the most secure but alternatively ask for another recognised form of ID - For example a valid student card and a driving licence. (You should match the name of the driving licence to the name on the card.)

What other measures should I take ?

Before leaving home one could tell someone the name of the person that you are going with and where you are going. Write down their details and check that it matches your driver/passenger. The decision as to whether to take a passenger/get in the car is entirely up to you. You are under no obligation to go ahead with the liftshare. If you do ever have any problems please do not hesitate to contact us, and we will endeavor to prevent them happening again.

What insurance implications are there?

"Participating in the lift-share scheme will not invalidate drivers’ motor insurance", says Vic Rance of the Association of British Insurers. "Drivers in doubt should contact their insurers".
Sharing cars and sharing the cost should not increase your insurance cost, however charging your passengers more than their share of the running cost can invalidate your cover.

A Happy Car Sharer
"I was concerned about the security aspect but thought I would try it anyway, just to see if there would be someone with who I could share my commute every day. I now use this scheme nearly every week and occasionally my boyfriend uses it at the weekend…he is an Arsenal fan. He travels all over and I know he's met loads of football mates now because they share lifts. We both now think the scheme is brilliant! "
